Basic Rules of Netball

Specific SSSN League Rules:

  1. 5 points for a win

  2. 3 for a draw

  3. 1 point if you lose within 5 goals

  1. Staff permitted to play:

    - Teaching

    - Support

    - Trainees

  1. No students, including 6th Form or work experience students, are permitted to play.

  1. Please note, as this is a female netball league. We ask that if you wish or need to field male staff, please can you check with your opposing team that they don’t mind. Any team starting with male players will automatically begin the match with a handicap of -5 goals per male. NB. This rule is void if both teams have the same amount of male players. Please contact the opposing team in advance as they may choose to field a male player to match any that you have.

  1. Schools that submit two teams in to the league must have two separate squads. The individual teams (ie. A or B) may select any players to play each match as long as they are from their designated squad. Squad members are not permitted to switch teams. This is to maintain fairness against the schools that only enter one team.

  1. Teams are allowed to switch and move around players at the end of each quarter (but only from the same squad if A/B teams).

  1. Both teams are asked to provide an umpire. If you have any difficulties, please contact the opposing team in advance. You are not permitted to use KS3 or KS4 students as umpires.

  1. Unless a match has been rescheduled in advance, teams must turn up with 5 or more players otherwise the match is forfeited and the opposing team get the points. If injury occurs during a match and the injured player cannot continue, a substitute should be used to fill the position. If there are no substitutes available, the team must finish the match a player down. This rule applies down to 5 players per team. In the event of a match being abandoned due to player injury, the team causing the abandonment will forfeit the game. Team captains can over-rule this and mutually decide at the point of abandonment to replay the match or submit the score as it stands.

  1. You are permitted to reschedule fixtures that your team are unable to make. Please do this with as much notice as possible. Sometimes a match will have to be rescheduled with late notice due to very bad weather. As this is a rare occurrence, please be understanding. Teams will forfeit a game if they fail to turn up for a scheduled match. Where possible, please try to rearrange for the same day but at the opposing school - if they have an available indoor court!
